Cultivating roses
is quite easy, but it is recommendable to follow some basic indications,
in order to obtain a balanced growth.
To plant out
Roses with naked roots must be planted out from october to march; containerized
roses can be planted out all along the year, avoiding cold or humid
days and the hottest days in summer. Before you plant them, it is necessary
to prepare a hole in the ground (50 cm deep and large); once you have
prepared the hole, add some matureorganic fertilizer (15-20 litres),
which must be properly mixed with the ground. It is also recommendable
to wait a couple of days, so that the ground settles in. After that,
it is possible to collocate the plant widening the roots in the ground
and avoiding the contact between the roots and the fertilizer; then,
fill the hole, pressing the ground with the foot keeping the colletto
1 cm deep. Containerized roses can be planted out as they are, just
open up slightly the ground around the roots; on the contrary, the roots
of the roses with naked roots need to be shortened and immediately put
in a mixture of 30% of mature fertilizer, 30% of loam, 40% of water;
add a small quantity of fungicide in order to improve the taking root
of the plant and prevent the proliferation of fungal parasites. After
that, water the groud deeply, with at least 20-25 litres of water.
Ground
Roses are not demanding plants groundwise and can grow also in sfavorevoli
conditions; for a perfect result, though, it is recommendable to plant
out these plants in a light ground, rich of organic materia and well
drained, with a ph close to 6,5. If the ground of our flowerbeds is
heavy and argillaceous, we can add a small quantity of sand and of a
good universal balanced loam; it is sometimes recommendable to make
a hole (60-70 cm deep) to be filled up with gravel, pumice stone or
lapillus, in order to avoid dangerous stagnation of water.
Collocate the roses
In choosing the right position for your roses, we remind you that most
roses need sunny places in the direct sunlight for at least 6 hours
a day; in the areas with a very hot climate it is better to choiose
a place in the garden where the roses can have shade late in the afternoon.
It is not possible to plant out roses where there where roses before,
and this is because the roots of the roses release toxins which prevent
the growth of other roses; if we really want to replace an old plant
which we do not like any more we have to remove the ground (60-70 cm
deep) and replace it with new one.
For a correct growth of the plants we have to keep them in a ventilated
place, not too close to each other (50-60 cm from each plant) and not
too close to walls or hedges that might create too much shade. In order
to have armoniose flowerbeds, we can choose roses of the same colour,
or mix different roses (at least 3 plants for each variety).
